Fly fishing lake trout

Late September: Fly Fish the Spawn

In the Fall, lake trout migrate from their deep summer haunts to shallow rock reefs to spawn. When the surface water temperature reaches 52°F, the trout begin spawning in rock reefs, as shallow as two to three feet of water. This typically occurs the last week of September on Sandybeach Lake. During the spawn, the trout will strike almost anything in your tackle box with flash and action. This is a great opportunity to fight and catch the trout of a lifetime on the fly!
