WHAT TO EXPECT

Black bears of Northwest Ontario feed on wild berries throughout the summer, yielding a sweet red meat wrapped in a thick, shiny black coat.

Hunting season begins August 15 and runs through the end of September. Starting in July, sites are baited weekly with 55-gallon drums full of sweet treats, carbs and protein. As the hunt date approaches, sites are baited with increasing frequency.

Guests spend mornings fishing for trophy northern pike, smallmouth bass and lake trout, and then head to the tree stands to hunt the afternoon/evening. Hunters are highly encouraged to spend time studying each bear onsite, assessing behavior and physical attributes in order to harvest a mature boar. Most bears will hang around bait sites and eat for a while, so there is plenty of time to assess and make a steady shot. Hunters receive education and tools to distinguish boars from sows, determine bear size and focus on optimal shot placement. We'll also share tips for processing and preparing black bear meat, as well as our favorite uses for the bear hide and fat. Just wait until you taste this meat - it's likely to become your wild game of choice!
